17:31:01 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (Technical issue, please stand by)
17:34:22 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Thank you very much for coming to Mr. Iwakami's panel
17:34:29 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> he's an executive producer at aniplex japan
17:34:33 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> he produced a number of hits in japan
17:34:59 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> here, let's introduced, i'm hiroe tsukamoto, localization specialist etc, and next to me is EJ social media and marketing
17:35:15 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Let's start by introduction, Mr. Iwakami
17:35:21 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Please welcome Atsuhiro Iwakami
17:35:33 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> If you could introduce yourself, that would be great.
17:35:36 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Good evening everyone
17:36:02 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> I'm Atsuhiro Iwakami, i've been a producer at aniplex for a number of years, so i hope i can talk about the works i worked on today
17:36:18 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> This is your third time attending a con in the states, what is your impression?
17:36:46 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> It's been very rushed, i got in yesterday morning and i head back tomorrow morning, but it's always encouraging to see a lot of anime fans
17:37:05 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> So, let's take a look ... do you guys know his works?
17:37:13 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Last night we premiered madoka..
17:37:18 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Here is some of his works...
17:37:27 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> introduce them all and play a short clip
17:38:09 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> 009-1
17:38:13 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Kannagi
17:39:11 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Hidamari Sketch (video is hoshimitsu)
17:39:49 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Bakemonogatari
17:40:35 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Cencoroll
17:41:28 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai)
17:42:11 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Oreimo
17:42:31 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (side note: not all the extras were on that slide yesterday)
17:42:33 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (check the website)
17:42:45 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Aniplex will be releasing it this october
17:42:48 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Madoka
17:43:34 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Next is brand new, will start airing in october
17:43:38 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> this is the first time to show a trailer in america
17:43:41 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> this is exclusive
17:43:51 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (Fate/Zero)
17:45:37 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> That's some of his shows...
17:46:01 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (@Iwakami) And you must have lots of memories of each titles... do you want to share any thoughts on the titles
17:46:54 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> All of the titles are important to me, but i might be most found of garden of sinners, it was a big hit in japan and because of that, it let me assemble staff and do projects that i wanted to do based on that success
17:47:11 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> And I was having an interest time looking at you guys cheer or react to various clips that we were showing.
17:47:24 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> I'll tell you what i like and you tell me what you like and i'll take that back to japan
17:47:44 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (@Iwakami) And heard you are working on a new project called Animebunko, could you talk about that project?
17:48:47 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Animebunko is a new project that's starting this fall, it's going to be a video series, in collaboration with ufotable, and the media that is TV and theater can be sometimes limiting and you can't do much experimental material
17:49:10 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> i think the anime bunko project will be a platform for that and (lost) establish a genre
17:49:29 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (@) Do you think the fans are different? (betweeen the countries, paraphrase)
17:50:10 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> One thing I noticed is that , looking at otakon cosplayers, you show a lot of diversity in what you like, and a longer memory too, a lot of japanese cosplayers do what's most current and what's the trend, and you see a lot of change between what's current and not
17:50:13 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> the cycle is much more rapid in Japan
17:50:42 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> I do think the fans love for the favorite fans is universal, i got a present from a fan yesterday, it's very well made (It's a handmade QB)
17:51:03 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> So, moving to Q&A
17:52:07 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q: What inspired the story for Madoka? As a fan of precure and nanoha, it kinda broke the barrier of the limits of magical girls
17:52:47 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: Well, it's my first original anime project, and if i was going to do an original, i thought that i wanted to do a giant robot or magical girl
17:53:45 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> I believe that giant robots and magical girls are particularly suited to the anime format because they come to life in the media, and when you have magical girls transforming, you need a story,
17:54:09 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> and i've been impressed by gen urobuchi, so i thought he would be the perfect writer to bring framework to the context (or was that reversed)
17:55:31 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q: When starting a new project, (lost)?
17:55:31 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: Well you go by thinking what would be entertaining, and what would be interesting, and you just choose
17:55:56 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q: (favorite mahou shoujo series, and the second part was about influences in writing madoka)
17:56:13 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: Very partial to an old show Minky Momo
17:56:46 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> I was watching that as a child, i was in grade school back then, but i was reading anime magazines, (something about gundam), it (momo) was really popular back then
17:57:29 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> If i incorporated any experiences into madoka as for what i always wanted to do is be a programmer for entertainer products
17:57:37 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> as each ep went on air and got a reaction, that's what i was enjoying and wanted to do
17:58:03 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q: What's it like working with Shinbou Akiyuki in a creative setting.. and when he's drinking?
17:59:23 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: He loves his alcohol.. so after pretty much after every production meeting, we go to dinner and drinking... but he does not feel comfortable infront of crowds, so he doesn't go to anime events in japan or do interviews, but he has mystery about him, but he's a nice guy
18:00:13 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> On one hand, it's a guy to get along with, but as a director, he's a tough guy, and he will say no to a lot of things that he won't compromise to, which allows the shinbo flavor to come out in every show
18:00:58 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> And one more thing about him, he also has a producer like mentality... about (??) works to an audience, so i've learned a lot of things about what it takes to be a producer from him
18:01:46 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q: Did you have CCS in mind a lot when making the show? Any other shows in mind when production the show?
18:02:04 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (long intro about some similarities)
18:03:32 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: There was nothing intentional, but we can look at CCS as one of the classics in the genre, and there might be some superficial similarities, but I always thought madoka was going to be different from any magical girl show, so there wasn't any pre-existing show that we intentionally went close to
18:04:20 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q; A lot of people are attributing to piracy to the death of anime and the stagnation... but in japan, aniplex titles do really well, so is the industry healthy, is it dying?
18:06:04 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: I do understand the feeling that there are a lot of madoka fans that not everyone has legal means of watching it
18:06:15 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> even in japan, madoka was broadcast on thurs in osaka and fri in tokyo
18:06:30 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> so there were fans in america who got to see episodes before tokyo did
18:07:07 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> And in the age of internet, it is interesting to see this phenomenon, but you do need to protect your product or you can't sustain your creative endeavors
18:08:01 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> So what we like to do in terms of guidence, we'd like to guide the fans and industry to a healthy relationship
18:07:52 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> so what we 'd like to do with fatezero this october, we'd like to do a north american distribution simultaneously with japan
18:08:19 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Q: (question about garden of sinners being 7 movies which was brand new format wise)
18:09:02 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> A: Unlike madoka, kara no kyoukai was a novel and my work was to bring it to the fans in a format that was most faithful to the original novel
18:09:45 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> and the novel consisted of 7 chapters of varying length, and this wouldn't have been suitable in tv series or 2 hour tv movie format
18:10:06 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (the above simul distribution was simulcasted)
18:10:23 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> last question
18:10:29 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> leave questions on our site and we'll post a special interview
18:10:45 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> now questions from iwakami to us
18:10:49 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> how many have seen all of madoka?
18:11:08 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (most of all them here...)
18:11:12 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> who doesn't like hitomi
18:11:14 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> who doesn't like QB
18:11:19 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> how about kara no kyoukai
18:11:26 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (maybe about 1/3rd..)
18:11:35 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> how about ore imo
18:11:39 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (slightly more than kara no kyokai)
18:12:03 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> I'd like to talk more about madoka.... the video release...
18:12:50 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> Along with our north american partner, we'll be releasing the North american edition of Madoka
18:12:59 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> it will have special packaging so even japanese fans will want to buy it
18:13:27 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> now raffle
18:14:09 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (includes a specially drawn fate zero thing specially drawn for otakon)
18:15:34 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> (a cosplayer of madoka's mom won a bluray)
18:20:19 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> before we move to autograph, can we have a final message
18:21:19 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> madoka magica was a show that we started from scratch, and it hasn't been a full year, and it's been only maybe half a year since it's been introduced and i'm glad to see there's so much love for the show, and that makes me glad i came to the states
18:21:42 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> and i promise to continue making more shows that will entertain everyone, so please watch my shows
18:21:51 <bay|Ota|Iwakami> End
