Unedited Feed from the Masao Maruyama panel at Otakon 2010. Transcription: bayoab
Note: ( ) is usually commenting on the panel and was not said.

15:30:00 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Note: The first half of the panel was taken in Notepad while having internet troubles. The times are faked for now.)
15:30:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Selected parts from the Maruyama Masao panel:
15:31:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> My name is Maruyama Masao, I think everyone for the trouble of coming to the panel.
15:32:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> I'm happy you came here.
15:33:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q&A
15:34:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: What is the true joy you get out of doing your line of work?
15:35:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: The process of making it and having the joy of presenting it to everyone.
15:36:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: Why was there never a second Ninja scroll movie....
15:37:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... trying to come up with an answer...
15:38:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> It's sometime... maybe next year... maybe 5 years... maybe 10 years...
15:39:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> But Maruyama can promise you that there will be a Ninja Scroll webisode directed by Kawajiri
15:40:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: Thoughts on the state of the anime industry.
15:41:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: Maruyama believes the situation in the japanese animation industry is currently bad, because, speaking of quantity wise, the number of shows has decreased to half of what it used to have.
15:42:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> That means there is fewer opportunties to do projects that he wanted to do.
15:43:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: (Question regarding Satoshi Kon)
15:44:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: He told Satoshi kon he wants him to work with robots so right now he's working with a robot based anime.
15:45:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: Will OVAs make a comeback in the industry?
15:46:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Is the existence of an OVA a benefit in the long run.
15:47:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: He doesn't believe OVA will increase in a real quantity, but what's good will..(lost)
15:48:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: Work being done on another season of Ippo?
15:49:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: The original comics are still going on so the contents are there and as long as NTV, who is the main founder of the animation series wants to give it a go, we're definitely up for it.
15:50:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: Did you get hurt when you lost the fight regarding the Trigun movie cast? (He wanted a new cast and the director wanted the old cast.)
15:51:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: I basically lost. The directed wanted the original cast. I wanted a new cast. The director had the fans on his side so it's not possible to fight the thousands and thousands of fans.
15:52:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: With a show like Tatami Galaxy where the style is so different from the regular, do you use it to expand your staff's (lost)
15:53:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: Yea, that kind of series really draws out the staffs potential.
15:54:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Masaki Yuasa is a very talented director. He's very unique. He has a style that no other animators have. He made a movie called mind game before coming to madhouse and i was a fan of that film who wanted to work with him.\
15:55:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> We started working together and made Kemonozume, then Kaiba, and then Tatami. Then we are sorta making, a not sequel or prequel, but it is related in a way, but a theatrical movie that is similar to Tatami Galaxy.
15:56:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> This year when we aired and simulcasted Tatami, we got a really god response, so it really meant something to Maruyama... cause it's very artistic, and yet it's still entertaining to come out and say they like it. It's hard for an artistic film to get those kind of reviews. I really thought it meant something to the future of anime.
15:56:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> If you haven't watched Tatami Galaxy, it's a great series, so I recommend it.
15:56:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Question regarding motion capture?)
15:56:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: I actually despise motion captures because the thing is, about animation, the whole point is interpreting the movements of things inside of your mind and in your imagination
15:56:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> When you do motion capture, it's no longer animation. It's the same as live action. He's not entirely against it as he believes it's a good tool but if it is entirely motion capture, it's no longer animation.
15:57:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: (Question about outsourcing and training the future animators)
15:57:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A; There is definitely an effect on training new animators. When the companies were wealthy, they were able to train their animators, but as the budgets gone down, we could no longer do it in Japan.
15:57:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Working with Korea is still working as a team.
15:57:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Missed two parts in here)
15:57:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> There are always people out there to work with and working with Korea and China is actually a great experience. (missed one part)
15:58:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: What did you meant by saying that Redline was going to be the last of it's kind. What did you mean by that?
15:58:02 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A: Actually, leme revise that, you would never seen handdrawn animation with this much effort put into it is what he meant.
16:04:49 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Now re-joining Maruyama, in progress)
16:04:38 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Question is regarding working with other studios.)
16:04:58 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> As long as their teams chemistry works out with ours, we're pleased to work with them.
16:05:16 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> Q: What do you believe can be done to expand the audience in Japan demographically.
16:05:32 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> A; I don't know (in english)
16:05:48 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> It always helps if you guys go around.
16:06:41 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Old) Q: Work being done on another season of Ippo?
16:06:55 <bay|Ota|Maruyama> (Old) A: The original comics are still going on so the contents are there and as long as NTV, who is the main founder of the animation series wants to give it a go, we're definitely up for it.
