13:32:21 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> Hello everyone, I'm Yuji Mitsuya.
13:32:29 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask.
13:33:03 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So I guess, I'll just start talking about why I became a voice actor.
13:33:18 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I played minor roles, since I was 12... on TV
13:33:24 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I was pretty popular I think.
13:33:37 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> When I was little, I lived in Nagoya.
13:33:49 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> When I graduated high school and I was 18, i decided to move to Tokyo.
13:34:22 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so I thought, I'm popular here, I'm fairly well known, I'll go to tokyo and get a job right away. And it didn't come to me... why? Because I'm short.
13:34:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> As a child actor, I was able to act. Height didn't matter.
13:35:11 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So when I found myself, I was often shorter than the actress. So if I was seated, I'd stay till toward the end. If I was standing, they asked me to leave.
13:35:36 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So, I still had aspirations of become a movie star, so I went to school to become a director or script writer.
13:35:47 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so while I went to school, I worked part time in a sandwhich store.
13:36:14 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so, while I was going to school and working part time, a producer and director friend who I had worked with at NHK.
13:36:28 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> He had been charged with a new show and wanted to know if wanted to take part.
13:37:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> It was a puppet show.
13:37:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so the production was done with us just recording our voices according to the script, and then it would be broadcast while the puppeteers would act what we recorded.
13:37:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And I was playing a crow, and the only thing I said was "aho", (idiot)
13:37:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And all my costars were people back then, who were doing a new job called "the voice actors"
13:37:53 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And the song was called pururu-kun and it lasted a few years.
13:37:54 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And the song was called purur-kun and it lasted a few years.
13:38:19 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So I wanted to finish my education so I continued and then decided I wanted go to college when I finished.
13:38:35 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so even going to college, I still wanted to pursue my acting.
13:38:54 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So I joined the acting company with Yukino Minagawa(?)
13:39:09 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so my life continued, working on Pururu, going to college, and acting with Minagawa.
13:39:22 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And in the company, there was a mentor who specialized in dubbing over foreign films.
13:39:45 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And having worked with other voice actors, and seeing someone dub foreign films, that's when i came to realize about the job of being a voice actor.
13:40:02 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> But at the time, I didn't have a shred of inkling about becoming a voice actor. I thought I wanted to be a TV and movie star.
13:40:14 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so eventually, like all things, pururu came to an end, and we had a wrap party.
13:40:53 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so, I wasn't in the last episode, so I thought maybe I shouldn't go to the wrap party, so instead I went to the part-time job making sandwhiches.
13:41:09 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> But when I went to work, my boss there said that maintaing interpersonal relationships is part of your job, so you go to that wrap party.
13:43:01 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so I got to the party, and by that time, and all the voice actors had been drinking, and a certain actor, a super vetran voice actor sat down next to me and said "we got auditions tomorrow, you want to come". I wasn't sure if he was serious seeing how drunk he was. He drew me this map on a napkin and handed it to me. So half believing it was ramblings, I checked it out.
13:43:14 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And what I found there was an audition for Combattler V
13:43:54 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So this was an anime, I had never done one before. What i found out was they give you a piece of paper with a picture of the character and a line, you picture the character and read a line
13:43:59 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I tried out for the lead character and the lead bad guy.
13:44:19 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And fortune being what it is, I landed the lead role in the show.
13:44:48 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So, if not for the ramblings of a drunking vetran voice actor and a sandwhich shop owner, I wouldn't be a voice actor.
13:44:55 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I believe then and I believe now that you have to listen to people's opinions.
13:45:20 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so I touched upon this yesterday, but I was horrible in the beginning, and I knew I was horrible, and there is nothing more miserable than doing your job knowing that you stink.
13:45:26 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I was known as a brilliant actor.
13:46:00 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And it got to the point to where I was so bad, I had to stay behind to re-record my lines after everyone else had gone.
13:46:23 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And what surprised me is that even though I was last, the vetran actors started waiting for me.
13:46:43 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> What we would do was go eat and drink, and they would give me pointers and lectures about what had to be done to improve.
13:47:39 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> the most important thing is to read the script and perform the script
13:47:39 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so what they told me was that, you are a child actor, you know how to act, who cares about the flaps. just act
13:47:49 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And since those days, I still read through a script, i still comprehend what my lines are supposed to do and how to best perform it before going into the studio.
13:48:13 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And even with this great advice, I had come to believe that after Combattler V ends, my life as a VA is over.
13:48:38 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> But, my next jobs, were Candy candy and...barrager(?)
13:48:44 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> and then I got jobs dubbing over foreign films
13:49:17 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So the biggest difference between the two genres of dubbing is anime is over a blank slate
13:49:32 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> While you are dubbing foreign films, you are hearing what the original said in one ear
13:50:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So one of the first things I did was a western. And so one of the first things was to count to 3 but having had some english, I said 3 in english and had to retake the line.
13:51:13 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And I had to do a love scene, I just had to say Aishiteiru, and after retake after retake, and on one take, I said it in english, but they said "it's perfect, but we need it in japanese."
13:51:33 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> and so, that's how I got my start. and i started getting popular, to the point where I got to release my first album.
13:51:43 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I performed in a band with other voice actors and did some touring.
13:52:04 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I was in a band with the voice of Seiya from Saint Seiya (And one other)
13:52:17 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And I was a popular idol voice actor, to the point of doing an audience in budoukan.
13:52:32 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I had a lot of screaming fangirls screaming my name while I was on stage.
13:53:07 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So in the early 20s, that's how I lived my life, and when i was 27 or so, I was so popular that i was doing 11 shows a week and started questioning if that's what i wanted to do.
13:53:39 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So I thought I needed to take a break, and took 3.5 months off and went to NY to watch musicals and broadway shows
13:54:28 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So I returned to Japan thinking I wanted to be a stage actor, even though I wanted to voice act, so with one of the voice actors in One Piece, formed a theater group.
13:54:28 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> So I did stage played and continued my voice acting.
13:54:28 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> When I turned 35, we closed down that theater group..
13:54:57 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> Around that time, it was a secondary big boom of voice actors in Japan. It was so popular, that voice acting was one of the top 10 careers wanted to be.
13:55:15 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> And so there was a voice actor training school that asked me to become an instructor.
13:55:26 <bay|Ota|Mitsuya> I agreed and set up a curiculuum to teach other voice actors
