20:01:21 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Hello
20:01:26 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Thank you for coming, I didn't realize it woudl be in this big a room
20:01:49 <bay|NDK|Nakao> First I brought a DVD of the works I've done in Japan, so please watch this
20:02:27 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Ryusei Nakao is the voice of Mayuri in Bleach and Freeza in DBZ among other things)
20:05:14 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Has been 6 years that I've been in bleach
20:06:27 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (He notes that Mayuri doesn't wear a mask)
20:08:21 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Jir in King of Bandits of Jing...)
20:08:41 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Alfred in Montana Jones)
20:10:34 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (An Pan Man)
20:11:58 <bay|NDK|Nakao> As you can tell, I don't really portray that many humans
20:12:04 <bay|NDK|Nakao> This is my sales point, that i don't do humans
20:12:28 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I was born in 1951, Feb 5th (lost)
20:12:54 <bay|NDK|Nakao> When I first went into voice acting, I was 5 years old.
20:12:59 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Was a radio drama...
20:13:19 <bay|NDK|Nakao> So from the radio drama, i went to animation, i was in first year of junior high when i did the first one
20:13:39 <bay|NDK|Nakao> But unfortunately, since i was still a student, i got the great work of a main characte,r i had to quit the show in 3 months
20:13:53 <bay|NDK|Nakao> But lucky for me, I was able to keep on going and as you see, I've been doing all these works all these years.
20:13:57 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Has anyone seen DBZ?
20:14:37 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Bleach? An Pan Man?
20:14:43 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Since you are here, I'd like to do some DBZ
20:14:50 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I'd like you to do Goku's voice
20:14:56 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Battle scene DVD please.
20:15:35 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (you being the audience)
20:16:51 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (His voice is almost naturally like that)
20:18:01 <bay|NDK|Nakao> This is a very rare scene, where Freeza is badly beaten by Goku .... for 3 times..whenever he shot the Kamehameha ... was a whole month (lost) ...in DB Kai, the show was remade and it was much faster
20:18:26 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Even in Japan where there are so many animation, ti's very rare for a show to be remade 10 years later with the same voice actor, and I'm very honored to be a part of that
20:18:53 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Who wants to do Goku's voice?
20:19:04 <bay|NDK|Nakao> You look strong, come up.
20:19:28 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Have you seen DBZ? All of it.
20:19:35 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Which bad guy did you like most? Cell.
20:19:40 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Say Freeza.
20:19:41 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Freeza.
20:19:43 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Excellent
20:20:41 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (He's doing the voice acting for the battle scene where SSJ Goku is beaing up on Freeza)
20:23:04 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Round of applauce
20:23:22 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Thank you very much (to the guy)
20:24:12 <bay|NDK|Nakao> It's amazing how good he is on his first time. I've been doing it for years.
20:24:15 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Calls up a girl.)
20:24:44 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Let's try a female voice for Goku this time
20:26:10 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Wonderful.
20:26:25 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Once more.
20:27:57 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Everybody's so great.
20:28:13 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Turns out she's an opera actor)
20:28:30 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Thank you very much (at her)
20:28:39 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I'm amazed that everyone who comes up here is so good.
20:28:54 <bay|NDK|Nakao> In Tokyo, we used to do a lot of battle scnese like this, when we do these battle scenes, you lose your voice at the end.
20:29:02 <bay|NDK|Nakao> That's why we record the battle scene at the end of the recording session.
20:29:12 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Who's going to be the next volunteer.
20:29:19 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Another strong looking male.
20:30:09 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Which bad guy do you like (walks up to him pressure-pusher style)
20:31:18 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (They are starting to ablib and go out of character)
20:35:22 <bay|NDK|Nakao> As you can tell, with a little bit of voicing, I get sweaty, as did Goku's va
20:34:49 <bay|NDK|Nakao> While we're doing the recording, we're doing the actions too, so the sweat gets everywehre
20:35:05 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Goku's va does 3 characters by herself
20:36:22 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Calls up another "strong looking" girl)
20:39:26 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I didn't expect that Jaws theme
20:39:33 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (She adlib'd the jaws theme in at one point)
20:40:09 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Luckily, we were able to see the picture on the screen right now, in reality when we do the recording, it's so often we don't even have the picture on the screen.
20:40:37 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Unfortunately to many reasons, when they make anime in Japan today, the picture will not be available until the last minute.
20:40:51 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Right at the end of the production, so when we do the recordings with the voice, there is no picture
20:41:06 <bay|NDK|Nakao> At the time 10 years ago, when we did the DBZ recording, there was always a line showing up on the screen.
20:41:16 <bay|NDK|Nakao> When the red line is goku, when there is a black line, there is freeza
20:41:34 <bay|NDK|Nakao> While you see those lines on the screen, that's when you speak and it shows how long the line is
20:41:47 <bay|NDK|Nakao> toward the end of the line, there is an x mark for where the punch for the battle scene is
20:42:01 <bay|NDK|Nakao> after the x mark, there is a curvy line for when he's been hit
20:42:16 <bay|NDK|Nakao> so it doesn't feel like doing recording for the anime, it feels like some kind of voice testing
20:42:32 <bay|NDK|Nakao> people who have no idea what i'm doing gonna think i'm crazy
20:43:00 <bay|NDK|Nakao> But the time you see the real show, with all the sfx and the music and all the voices mixed, it comes out as the show you know
20:43:26 <bay|NDK|Nakao> The big difference between the recording here in the states and Japan, is in the states, when you do the recording, you only have one actor in the booth.
20:43:34 <bay|NDK|Nakao> In Japan, everyone who is in the scene is all in the booth.
20:43:51 <bay|NDK|Nakao> So when I'm having a battle scene with Goku, I have another actor in the box doing the Goku part
20:44:21 <bay|NDK|Nakao> But here in the states, when they do the recording, when Goku does the recording, he only does his part, and in a separate session, Freeza does his lines
20:44:59 <bay|NDK|Nakao> It's not which is a better system, there is a reason each studio does things its own way. As an actor, I prefer to have the actor next to me doing the actor with me. It's better for me
20:45:19 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Nowadays, due to the situation, even in Japan, there is situations where we have to do the recordings alone.
20:46:18 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I also do the dubbing for the foreign films. There was a film that came to Japan this summer (lost part) Candy factory..where I had to do the recording myself.
20:46:34 <bay|NDK|Nakao> It was disney who started this recording style of having each actor do their own lines by theirselves
20:47:05 <bay|NDK|Nakao> in Japan, when i did the voice for lady and the tramp, I was surprised when Disney told me to do tramp's part myself
20:47:13 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I never got to meet the person playing lady
20:48:09 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Regardless of the style of the recording, it is always a pleasure for us actors to be a part of the great shows that will remain in the fans memories and bring those memories and emotions among the fans,
20:48:03 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (lost rest)
20:48:16 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Looks like we have more time, so if you have any questions.
20:48:22 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: Who is your favorite to voice act?
20:48:36 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: That's always a hard question to answer, but I love every character that I played.
20:48:45 <bay|NDK|Nakao> It's all bad guys, but I love them
20:49:07 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: Is it fun to play bad guys all the time?
20:49:38 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: (In Mayuri's voice) It's fun. (normal) Once I played the bad guys, I didn't want to play the good guys.
20:49:56 <bay|NDK|Nakao> There are many kinds of bad guys, but the kinds I love are the ones that the audience can like.( paraphrase)
20:50:21 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: So you must do a lot of video games, how is different from doing anime?
20:50:51 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: We, the voice actor, what we do as our profession is to match our breath to the scene.
20:51:24 <bay|NDK|Nakao> When we are acting, we are not thinking about lines they are saying, we are thinking about how is this character breathing, what kind of living thing is this character.
20:51:42 <bay|NDK|Nakao> But that is the hardest part of giving life to the non-animated picture, but that is the enjoyable part of being an actor.
20:51:48 <bay|NDK|Nakao> But if you act which is harder to do voicing, that would be the game.
20:52:04 <bay|NDK|Nakao> In the gaming voice recording, regardless of story, we have to do the voice line by line by line.
20:52:18 <bay|NDK|Nakao> So just for the screaming, we are asked to do 3 different versions, high medium low
20:52:24 <bay|NDK|Nakao> So that's really difficult.
20:52:33 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Does that answer your question?
20:52:49 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: When you recorded DBZ 10 years ago, did you realize the impact it would have on the world of anime.
20:53:59 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: As an actor, I really loved doing the voice acting, so even 10 years ago, I was hoping, and i was pretty sure i would keep voice acting until my voice came out, but i was really surprised that the same actors came back 10 year later
20:54:32 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: Do you listen to the shows you work on in other languages?
20:54:45 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: I don't get the chance, but I did have the experience of listening in a different language.
20:55:02 <bay|NDK|Nakao> The actor who did the non-japanese version, was really doing a good work of personalizingmy type of voice
20:55:06 <bay|NDK|Nakao> So i was really happy to hear that.
20:55:18 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: Do you have a favorite american villan that you like?
20:55:27 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: Wow, that's gonna be hard.
20:55:32 <bay|NDK|Nakao> There's so many.
20:55:49 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Let me ask you, what character do you think that fits me for casting.
20:56:06 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (Joker comes up)
20:56:34 <bay|NDK|Nakao> I'll tell the producer in Japan that they said I should play Joker and Skeletor
20:56:40 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: What's your favorite Freeza line?
20:57:10 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A: (My power level is 50 mil or something like that.)
20:57:21 <bay|NDK|Nakao> (In the battle scenes. That was very painful.)
20:58:22 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Q: I heard about a voice actor who got a nosebleed from effort. Anything similar ever happen to you?
20:58:09 <bay|NDK|Nakao> A; I've never had that experience but I've heard about that.
20:59:57 <bay|NDK|Nakao> However, this is totally different from what i was asked, in the old days in recording sessions, we showed the foreign film on big screens like this when doing the dubbing. (missed who) went to the movie theater nearby, when he woke up, he saw the character he normally portrayed talking in english, he thought he did a bad job and stood up and aplogized
21:00:11 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Looks like we're out of time. Thank you very much for allowing me to spend this great time with you and this great opportunity.
21:00:15 <bay|NDK|Nakao> Thank you.
21:00:16 <bay|NDK|Nakao> End
