|Unedited Feed from the Kenji Kamiyama Q&A panel at AnimeNext 2010. Transcription: bayoab
Note: ( ) is usually commenting on the panel and was not said.
17:03:21 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (This is the "room" with the audio issues again. The sound setup is not for a small panel.)
17:06:43 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Hello everyone.
17:06:57 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (His audio is fixed. The translators isn't)
17:07:25 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (Coming in middle)
17:07:39 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> People here cosplaying eden of the east which isn't out yet.. and he's pretty happy about that.
17:08:24 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> I've made Moribito, GITS:SAC, and EotE.17:08:25 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> I've made Moribito, GITS, and EotE.
17:08:32 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> GITS is already famous... made by Oshii...
17:08:43 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (lost)
17:09:00 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Especially Eden of the East, it uses Japanese programs and stuff, so he didn't think it would be popular in the states.
17:09:25 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> But he got lots of support from overseas so he's really happy and it encouraged him to make another movie.
17:10:12 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> He got inspired by people here ...(lost)
17:10:18 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Thought I should make something easy for cosplayer.
17:10:51 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Anyone has a question?
17:11:21 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: What was your favorite project to work on?
17:11:32 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: It's really hard to decide which one. Each one has a difficulty and each one has a fun part so I can't decide.
17:11:47 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Any concerns about where the anime industry is going?
17:12:51 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: Japanese companies have their own styles... but moe anime is so big in japan... but the stuff he makes... (lost)
17:13:17 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (Lost) So he's going to keep making the serious style.
17:13:29 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: For EotE, what's the difference between the TV and the movie?
17:14:32 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: (paraphrase: the tv shows are episodic and the movies have to be continuous)
17:15:41 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Heard as: (Any there any promising new animators that are working under you?)
17:15:06 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: He can't say much about his new works....
17:15:26 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> But he's making an original story from the animation movie.
17:16:02 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (question about time frames)
17:16:18 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A; It takes about a year to 2 years between when the project comes from him to when the first episode airs.
17:16:32 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Differences in challenges between doing an original work and adapting an existing work.
17:17:26 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: When he has a story before, it's easy to make stuff around the story, but when he starts from scratch, he needs to explain what he is thinking in his head... so that's the difficulty of creating from scratch.
17:17:50 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q; Do you have a demographic or people in mind when creating shows?
17:18:38 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: EotE was targeting Japanese females 20yr-30yr in the beginning.
17:18:50 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> It was actually popular to general 20 yr old.. younger people.
17:19:02 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> So it happened to be the younger generation that accepts EotE
17:19:42 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (Wasn't thinking about overseas?) with EotE since it was basically a Japanese issue
17:19:54 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (He assumes that they are similar overseas....)
17:20:27 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: With FUNi picking it up, how do you feel about the dub... being that there were distinct english and Japanese parts originally.
17:21:23 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: (Lost) but he will appreciate more if people understand the issue of the story
17:21:49 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: You use an insert song by Oasis, any reason for using it?
17:22:24 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: They actually had an album released in Japan at the time, and the record company asked him to use the song.
17:23:15 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: GITS:SAC (believe the question was about combining CG and traditional 2D)
17:23:36 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: At the beginning, it was difficult for the traditional eyes to adjust to the 3d art.
17:24:05 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> To make the gap smaller, they use a method to make the 3d(?) anime first and then go back...
17:24:16 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> They did the CG animation first and then did the cells for the tachikoma
17:24:30 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: For EotE, (something about paper animation)
17:25:04 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: The person who made the ending was (name), he's actually an artist for music videos
17:25:22 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> He wanted to have something unique, pop and artistic...
17:25:37 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> So he came up with the paper animation.
17:25:52 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Which character would you compare yourself to in EotE.
17:26:19 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: For EotE, all of the characters are kinda like him in some way... they all have elements of him.
17:26:36 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (Can't hear against the bg)
17:27:40 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: He actually thought about it beforehand, and in, EotE, he's using issue in Japanese society today, so he wanted to have some more culturally styled characters... that way (something) pops out more.
17:27:58 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (can't hear at all against the BG)
17:28:31 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (question about EotE and NEETS i believe)
17:28:55 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A; actually he got some emails and letters in japan after it aired.
17:29:22 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> But actually he got all the emails saying "i left the house", "i got work", etc
17:29:41 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q; For eden of the east, how did you find the character designer.
17:30:36 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: TV tokyo actually asked to use them.. and he had previously known her.
17:30:47 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (favorite character in... lost rest)
17:31:15 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: Favorite is the major.
17:31:30 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Because she is strong and has a human weakness. And she works really hard.
17:31:57 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q; You have an emphasis on realism. How was it doing research.
17:33:33 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: GITS:SAC and moribito are sci-fi(?), but EotE is based in reality...
17:33:36 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> using reality, he thinks he can depict more of the issue....
17:34:17 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: How is your experience in America so far?
17:34:26 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: When he was a teen, he wanted to come to america but couldn't.
17:35:18 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> He was doing the research for EotE in NY and DC, and he really got inspired.
17:35:09 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Japanese (something) doesn't have much power right now...
17:35:36 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> But people in NYC, the younger people looked really energetic.
17:35:36 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> I came here today and... people are really enthusiastic
17:36:12 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: How do you feel about the moe trend taking over and overshadowing more serious things?
17:36:33 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: I actually think moe stuff is cute. He appreciates the existance of (??). But he can't direct a moe type animation.
17:37:05 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (can't hear)
17:37:05 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> If the company doesn't make serious anime anymore, he doesn't get work.
17:37:29 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (not a clue what that question was about)
17:37:52 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: It's not a super power.
17:38:32 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> She's actually contacting (???) and not using a super power... and has contact with the government...
17:38:56 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Is there anyone who you would like to collaborate with in a future project.
17:39:11 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: That's a difficult question.
17:40:04 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: Researched some beforehand to pick up the (??)
17:40:04 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q; (something about locational choice)
17:40:30 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> But when he comes to the US for any certain place, .... other stuff may inspire him, so it's not steady over time.
17:40:53 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> He didn't think about the apartment that (Kanigawa?) was in the first episode.
17:42:04 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (censored)
17:42:11 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (censored)
17:42:40 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (something about the future and GITS and fears or something)
17:42:56 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: (missed) but the younger generation losing their power...
17:43:15 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> The younger generation in Japan is really passive.
17:43:37 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> They aren't powerful or active or positive toward society.
17:44:02 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (something about an EotE character9
17:44:16 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: Not sure if the character is a devil or an angel so he made the company an angel
17:44:42 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Any video games you enjoyed?
17:44:44 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A; hasn't played them much
17:45:18 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A really old video game called (Qube?) that he played when he was younger
17:45:26 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: is there any american animation that you like?
17:46:10 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: (Reeses?)
17:46:32 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Do you think the current political thing in Japan helps exasperate the problems.
17:46:39 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: One of the reasons.
17:46:42 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (Lost)
17:46:55 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Any particular title you like since you said you like moe.
17:47:16 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A; (Couldn't hear)
17:47:49 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (something about a comparison between two fo the EotE characters)
17:48:27 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: (knew the character would get disliked and tried to lessen it?)
17:49:05 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: Is there anything really cool about the future that you think is coming? (follow up to the previous gits and fears one)
17:49:42 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A: When he makes his work, he tries to make hope in his works.
17:49:48 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (can't hear)
17:50:51 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> Q: (Question was if he had any questions)
17:51:15 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> A; he didn't think that eden of the east will be accepted by overseas people so he wants to know why it seems to have been accepted.
17:51:25 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> (not copying the replies)
17:51:49 <bay|ANext|Kamiyama> End
