09:16:29 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Attack on titan is of course selling, but A Silent Voice, which isn't as popular on Crunchyroll, is selling really well

09:17:19 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: For Vinland, you have to meet a certain sales number to keep the license, does that include digital?
09:19:27 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: Yes, that includes digital
09:19:27 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: Noragami... the cover stock feels different...
09:19:27 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: It's a different coating than what we normally use
09:19:27 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: What makes you decide to use that?
09:19:27 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: The difference between that is the coating, the stock is the same, they are the same paper quality
09:19:27 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> For most series, it's a glossy finish
09:19:28 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> For other series, we're using a matte finish
09:19:28 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> We just decide based on the content and what people want to see
09:19:28 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> If it has traditional elements, we think about matte
09:19:28 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> On inuyashiki, we're doing a spot gloss
09:19:28 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: What research goes into the translation notes?
09:19:29 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: Usually the translators know this stuff
09:19:29 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> So we ask them to provide the notes for the back of the book
09:19:55 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Since they are a translator, they hopefully know this stuff already

09:20:07 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: Cover stock is the same, the paper for most releases is the same
09:20:20 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> ther are exceptions like the colossal editions

09:27:12 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: If we see it on the NY TImes best seller list, can we assume it's doing okay?
09:27:12 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: If you see it one time.. their sample size is wonky... so you can't conclue much... if it comes back every week, then it's likely selling well
09:27:13 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> Q: You said Crunchyroll licenses through Kodansha Japan, are your localizations going to be different?
09:27:13 <bay|Ota|Kodansha> A: For some of them, Kodansha Japan selects localizers, some we get to choose, but whatever goes up on Crunchyroll, we never see them, when we get the files, we put it through our normal process, we edit, we check for errors, we proof for typos... so our editions are different from Crunchyroll
